What is a stromal melt?

Keratolysis or necrosis of the corneal stroma.

How can laser eye surgery cause a stromal melt?

Stage III or Stage IV DLK; other inflammatory or infectious conditions; or extensive epithelial ingrowth are some of the complications of LASIK which could result in a stromal melt.

What is the result for the patient?

Severe vision loss.

How is it diagnosed?

Slit-lamp examination.

Corneal transplantation.
