Retinal tear

What is a retinal tear?

Break or tear in the retina (back of the eye) caused by traction on the retina by the vitreous humour.

How can laser eye surgery cause a retinal tear?

It is not entirely clear. There have been reports and studies on patients who experienced retinal tears after LASIK or after a retreatment. Some cases are linked to special risk factors such as previous ocular trauma or certain eye diseases.

How is it treated?

Retinal tears may be treated with an argon laser. It is important for them to be diagnosed promptly as they may lead to a retinal detachment and serious loss of vision.
