Flap rotation

What is a flap rotation?

Flap rotation is the term used for when the flap is disturbed, displaced, or dislodged from the position it was left in when it was replaced after the laser ablation.

What can cause a flap rotation?

Usually it is the result of trauma or of rubbing one's eyes in the early post-operative period. It is important to note that the flap can be dislodged more easily during the healing period, and take care accordingly, but also to be aware that accidents can cause it to be dislodged even years after surgery.

What might be the results to the patient?

A dislodged flap may cause considerable pain and blurred vision, depending how much it has moved or rotated. It may lead to further complications such as epithelial ingrowth, infection, flap folds, or a lost cap.

How is it diagnosed?

By slit-lamp examination.

How is it treated?

The flap must be replaced/repositioned surgically.
