Flap interface debris

What is flap interface debris and which surgery(-ies) is it associated with?

Debris may accumulate on the surface of the stroma after the laser ablation occurs but before the flap is replaced. This debris may be things such as tiny metallic flakes from the microkeratome; dust; cell debris; sponge/Q-tip strands and the like; or even powder from surgical gloves. It is associated with LASIK and could also apply to the newere flap procedures such as Epi-LASIK.

What are the potential results to the patient ?

One potential result is DLK, an inflammatory condition which can be serious if not attended to promptly. Other patients have reported chronic eye pain and/or photophobia (extreme light sensitivity) due to particles in the flap interface.

How can it be treated?

In some cases it is helpful to lift the flap and irrigate the stroma in an attempt to remove the debris.
