What is a punctum and what are punctal plugs?

Summary: Punctal plugs are tiny, usually plastic "plugs" inserted into the tear ducts to prevent tear drainage, "trapping" tears in the eyes.

Why should I get collagen plugs inserted first?

Summary: Collagen plugs dissolve by themselves in a few days and are a good way to test the general concept of punctal plugs before committing to permanent ones.

What is it like to get plugs? Does it hurt?

Summary: The puncta are anaesthetised and then stretched before insertion. Insertion techniques vary by type of plug. It shouldn't hurt.

Is it permanent?

Summary: Punctal plugs are meant to be permanent. Some types can be removed. Sometimes plugs can fall out. Depending on the type of plug it may be difficult to determine whether they are still there.

Will plugs work for me?
