Amniotic membrane is harvested from placental tissue and is used to reconstruct the surface of the eye. This treatment is used for various eye surface disorders or injuries, including occasionally extremely severe dry eye conditions.
How long does the procedure take, and the healing? (posted: 3 dec 2004)
The procedure reportedly takes about an hour. The membrane is sutured down and takes several weeks after that to heal.
