Autologous serum FAQ

What is autologous serum?

Autologous serum is a treatment for severe cases of dry eye which involves creating eyedrops using blood drawn from the patient. The drops are typically kept refrigerated and applied several times a day.

Is this treatment available commonly?

No. Clinical studies or one-off treatments are sometimes done, but this is not something that is widely available. Check with us for details about upcoming studies that we may know of.

How effective is it?

Results seem to be mixed. However, we have seen enough case reports and good results from studies that it seems clear that at least some patients who do not benefit from any other treatment may benefit from autologous serum.
