Antibiotic FAQ

Which antibiotics are sometimes used in treating dry eye?

Drugs in the tetracycline family. Doxycycline is by far the most frequently prescribed of all of them for dry eye.

What do they do?

We're not doctors, but our understanding is that they help to liquefy the meibomian gland secretions (which sometimes become hardened and block the glands, resulting in a destablised tear film). By unclogging the glands and getting things flowing properly, the lipid layer of the tear film is improved, which is tested clinically with the tear break-up time test.

Should I try doxycycline ?

If you have a destable tear film, it is something you may want to consider. However, like many drugs you should not take it when pregnant or nursing; and there are also potential side effects. Check with your doctor for more detailed information.
