Vitreous detachment

IN BRIEF

A rare complication of LASIK (though it occurs for other reasons as well) where the vitreous contracts and pulls away from its natural attachments on the inside surface of the eye.

DISCUSSION

A vitreous detachment may be accompanied by light flashes and new floaters. Patients who experience this should seek immediate attention from an ophthalmologist in case it is accompanied by a more serious condition such as a retinal tear or a vitreous hemorrhage.
