Corneal transplantation

IN BRIEF

Replacement of part or all of the cornea with donor tissue.

DISCUSSION

There are two types, a partial thickness transplant (lamellar keratoplasty) and full thickness transplant (penetrating keratoplasty).

Corneal transplantation is sometimes required if there has been a serious complication of laser eye surgery which has greatly reduced the patient's vision and which cannot be resolved with gas permeable contact lenses or with other less drastic surgical procedures.

Complications which might require a transplant include flap complications from a mechanical microkeratome, flap melt from infection or from uncontrolled epithelial ingrowth or other causes, and corneal ectasia.
