The full treatment area in a laser ablation, called the programmed optical zone and typically 6mm in diameter or more, may or may not be accompanied by a transition zone (also called blend zone) where less tissue is removed.
Whether a transition zone will be used depends on the capability of the laser employed, the availability of sufficient corneal tissue, and the patient's dark-adapted pupil size.
The rationale for a transition zone is that it is thought it may provide better optical quality, particularly for those with large pupils. If the patient has small pupils (<6.0mm in dim light) this may not be an issue. |
