Topography

IN BRIEF

The process of mapping the surface details of the cornea with a topographer, and the scans produced by the topographer.

DISCUSSION

Topography is routinely used in screening patients for corneal abnormalities, including keratoconus and forme fruste keratoconus, which are contraindications to laser eye surgery.

It is also used to assess the size, location and quality of the laser ablation after surgery. Topography is the most useful tool for identifying ablation defects such as decentrations, central islands, overly small optical zones and irregular astigmatism.
