Tear film

IN BRIEF

The layer of tears covering the cornea (surface of the eye).

DISCUSSION

The tear film is comprised of aqueous tears plus a lipid (oily) layer on top to retard evaporation and a mucin layer underneath to help spreading and adherence to the cornea.

A stable, balanced tear film is essential for vision, eye health, and comfort.

Any abnormality of any part of the apparatus that makes tear film is called ocular surface disease and may cause symptoms referred to as dry eye.
