Tarsorrhaphy

IN BRIEF

A surgical procedure in which the eyelids are partially sewn shut in order to narrow the opening and protect the eyes.

DISCUSSION

Tarsorrhaphy is one of the "treatments of last resort" in severe dry eye patients. If the surface of the eyes cannot be kept wet with natural and/or artificial tears and becomes ulcerated, narrowing the eye openings may become a necessary protective measure.
