Starbursts

IN BRIEF

A visual distortion associated with point light sources where light scatter produces the appearance of rays extending from the light source. Part of the vision disturbance known as GASH or NVD.

DISCUSSION

Starbursts and haloes are among the most frequently reported side effects of laser eye surgery. They may be short-lived and in fact most patients will probably experience symptoms in the first days or weeks. Sometimes they persist for the long-term. This is particularly true of patients who have high prescriptions and/or large pupils and/or had a smaller area of the cornea treated than their dark-adapted pupil size.

Starbursts come in many shapes and sizes. They may be small enough to be only a mild annoyance at worst, or they may literally be as large as houses.
