Scotopic pupil diameter

IN BRIEF

The diameter of the pupil as measured in scotopic lighting conditions, that is, in the dark. Technically, it means with an illumination level no greater than 0.034 lm/m2.

DISCUSSION

In laser eye surgery it is necessary to determine how large one's pupils get during normal evening/night activities, such as driving.

Approaches to dark pupil measurment vary, and different tools for pupil measurement may determine the level of illumination. Scotopic measurement is one approach, where the patient is literally in the dark.
