Scleral lens

IN BRIEF

A very large rigid gas permeable contact lens that covers both the cornea and the sclera.

DISCUSSION

Scleral lenses ("sclerals") are used therapeutically. They were developed for patients with severe dry eye, but can also be used for patients whose vision can only be corrected with gas permeable lenses and who cannot tolerate any lens resting on the cornea due to ocular surface disease. Scleral lenses act as a sort of fluid resevoir keeping the cornea constantly bathed in fluid.
