Radial keratotomy (RK)

IN BRIEF

Incisional vision correction surgery popular in the 1980s and now obsolete.

DISCUSSION

RK was the first refractive surgery to be successfully commercialised. It used incisions on the cornea to flatten and reshape it in order to change the focus of the eye.

RK is associated with certain long-term problems (most notably hyperopic shift) and also the same types of vision quality problems associated with current laser eye surgeries.
