(1) The refraction of light through the cornea and lens of the eye is how visual images are formed at the back of the eye (retina) from which they are transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve. If the eye is too long or short or irregularly shaped, causing light to refract in such a way that it does not focus properly at the back of the eye, corrective lenses (glasses or contacts) are placed in front to change how the light refracts through the eye.
(2) "Refracting" a patient means to determine their acuity and glasses prescription by trying a variety of lens powers on their eyes. |
