Punctal plugs

IN BRIEF

Small plugs (usually made of silicone) placed in the puncta or cannicula to reduce drainage of tears from the eyes.

DISCUSSION

Punctal plugs are often used in the treatment of chronic dry eye conditions, usually when the cause is aqueous deficiency.

There are many different brands, designs and sizes of punctal plugs.

A permanent alternative to punctal plugs is punctal cautery (burning shut the puncta).
