Photo therapeutic keratectomy (PTK)

IN BRIEF

Use of excimer laser to smooth the cornea and remove scars or other defects.

DISCUSSION

In PTK the epithelium is removed and the laser is applied selectively to scars or other defects, with the goal of smoothing and clearing the cornea.

PTK is used in treating some complications after LASIK including scars from buttonhole flaps and sometimes ablation defects such as central islands. A disadvantage sometimes reported of PTK is overcorrections, leaving the patient subtantialy hyperopic even though no refractive change is intended.

PTK is sometimes combined with PRK to smooth the cornea and also treat residual refractive error.
