Presbyopia

IN BRIEF

Age-related loss of ability to focus on objects near at hand.

DISCUSSION

Presbyopia is caused by changes to the natural lens of the eye. Over time it becomes less flexible and cannot focus on very near objects.

Presbyopia usually begins affecting people during their 40's. If they do not use glasses for distance vision, they will probably wear reading glasses. If they are myopic (near/shortsighted), they may find they can simply remove their glasses in order to read. If they are extremely myopic or are hyperopic, they may require multifocal lenses.

Presbyopia (whether you have it yet or not) is a key consideration in laser eye surgery and particularly in setting your goals and expectations. Laser eye surgery cannot correct presbyopia; it cannot give you good distance vision and good near vision in the same eye. It can give you good distance vision only, or distance vision in one eye and reading vision in another eye (a treatment plan referred to as monovision).
