Programmed optical zone
(ablation zone, treatment zone)

IN BRIEF

The area of tissue programmed to be removed from the corneal stroma during laser surgery.

DISCUSSION

The programmed optical zone diameter consists of the basic optical zone (area of full correction) plus, if any, transition zone (peripheral area not fully corrected).

The programmed optical zone is not necessarily the same as, and would rather be expected to be larger than, the effective optical zone, due to a variety of factors both in the delivery of the laser energy and the healing process.
