Penetrating keratoplasty (PK, PKP)

IN BRIEF

Full thickness corneal transplant.

DISCUSSION

In PK, a button-like segment of the cornea (all layers thereof) is removed from the eye and replaced with a button of cornea from the donor eye, and sutured in place.

A full thickness corneal transplant is sometimes required to treat complications of laser eye surgeries. Where possible, a partial thickness transplant may be preferable.
