Most candidates for laser eye surgery have myopia.
Myopia is caused by elongation of the eyeball, which causes light rays to "undershoot" and not focus properly on the retina (back of the eye), resulting in a blurred image. Laser eye surgery seeks to compensate for myopia by changing the shape of the cornea to bend the light in such a way that it focuses properly on the retina.
Myopia in an individual is often described as low, moderate, high or very high. There is surprisingly little uniformity in these definitions but to give an approximate guide only, low myopia may often be considered up to 3 dioptres, moderate myopia perhaps up to 6 dioptres, high myopia up to 9 dioptres, and very high myopia anything over 9 dioptres. However, these are by no means hard and fast rules. |
