Monocular diplopia
(Double vision, ghosting, multiple images)

IN BRIEF

When the eye sees a second, sometimes fainter, image of an object.

DISCUSSION

Diplopia = double vision; monocular = in one eye individually, as opposed to only when both eyes are open.

Ghosting can mean double images (diplopia) or multiple images (polyopia).

In laser eye surgery, ghosting can be the result of residual or induced astigmatism. However, severe or persistent ghosting which is not correctible with glasses is most frequently associated with ablation defects and in particular, decentred ablations, central islands and irregular astigmatism.
