Microstriae
(Bowman's cracks, Bowman's crinkles)

IN BRIEF

Microscopic crinkling of the Bowman's layer which occurs in LASIK patients due to the anatomical disparity between the flap and stroma.

DISCUSSION

Microstriae occur in virtually all LASIK patients, particularly with higher amounts of correction. It is interesting to note that they are not necessarily visible at all under the slitlamp. The cornea may appear to be perfectly clear, but if the epithelium is removed and Bowman's layer is exposed, the crinkling will be visible.

Sometimes the terms microstriae is used to describe small flap folds, but this is not correct.
