Generic term referring to any lens implanted in the eye, whether as an elective means of vision correction or for medically necessary reasons.

IOL applications include (for example) cataract surgery, where the natural lens has developed an opacification and so it is removed and an artificial lens is implanted; clear lens exchange, where the natural lens is healthy but is removed and replaced as a vision correction technique; and phakic IOLs, which are lenses implanted in front of or behind the natural lens as a vision correction technique.
