Induced monovision

IN BRIEF

Phrase used sometimes to describe an unwanted undercorrection of one eye.

DISCUSSION

Some myopic patients are undercorrected in one eye only, resulting in anisometropia (imbalance) which gives the patient the same effect s/he would have had with a deliberate monovision correction - that is, where one eye is deliberately left undercorrected in order to use it for near vision (in presbyopic patients). For a patient who does not desire or need or cannot tolerate monovision, this can be a real problem as depending on the imbalance they may need to wear contact lenses or undergo further surgery in order to achieve acceptable vision.

Induced monovision can also occur in a hyperope who is overcorrected in one eye.
