For patients considering LASIK, it is critically important that they be very carefully screened for forme fruste keratoconus. With the increasing incidence of corneal ectasia (a serious complication involving a cone-like bulging of the cornea after it is weakened during LASIK) the two factors usually pointed to are (a) excessive thinning of the cornea and (b) failure to identify at-risk patients, particularly those with forme fruste keratoconus, before surgery. Standards for techniques to identify forme fruste keratoconus (primarily through corneal topography) are continuing to evolve.
