Femtosecond laser

IN BRIEF

A solid state laser which uses ultrashort infrared light pulses for direct intrastromal tissue interaction.

DISCUSSION

Femtosecond lasers are increasingly being used as an alternative to mechanical microkeratomes in the creation of the LASIK flap. Touted advantages include greater precision in achieving the desired flap thickness, and lower enhancement rates.

Femtosecond lasers are also being used for corneal transplantation as a possibly more precise alternative to mechanical microkeratomes.
