Diffuse lamellar keratitis (DLK)
(Sands of the Sahara, SOS)

IN BRIEF

A complication of LASIK where there is a progressive inflammatory condition underneath the flap after it has been replaced, causing pain, light sensitivity and poor vision.

DISCUSSION

DLK is a challenging and not entirely understood complication of LASIK. In terms of halting the progression and the likelihood of permanent effects, it is quite important that it be diagnosed and aggressive treatment begun promptly.

It is frequently attributed to infiltrates between the flap and the stromal tissue below it.
