Bowman's membrane
(Bowman's layer)

IN BRIEF

A thin membrane in the cornea between the epithelium and the stroma.

DISCUSSION

The Bowman's membrane is affected by laser eye surgery though the impact of these effects upon vision is not well understood.

In LASIK, the Bowman's remains intact, but often (especially in patients with high prescriptions) develops tiny wrinkles called Bowman's cracks or crinkles.

In PRK (standard and transepithelial versions), the Bowman's is permanently removed in the process of exposing the stroma.
