A low blink rate can cause or contribute to dry eye symptoms. Blinking distributes tears across the eye. The tear film forms a vital protective covering for the eye. When the blink rate is low, tears are not distributed as well, the surface of the eye becomes drier, and tear production is not stimulated properly.
A low blink rate is generally associated with computer use, as we simply do not blink as often when we are staring at a computer screen. This causes the condition dubbed "computer vision syndrome", that is, a mild form of dry eye syndrome specifically associated with computer use.
