Anisometropia

IN BRIEF

Imbalanced vision because of a substantial disparity between the prescriptions in each eye.

DISCUSSION

To see well (with or without glasses) the two eyes should have similar amounts of refractive error. If there is more than, say, 2 dioptres difference between the eyes, it becomes very difficult to achieve acceptable vision with glasses and usually requires contact lenses to resolve.

Anisometropia can result from laser eye surgery if for example (a) the amount of intended correction is not achieved in one or both eyes; (b) there is regression; (c) there is a complication in one eye as a result of which surgery is not performed on the other eye at all. In many of these cases the only way the patient can achieve good vision is with use of contact lenses or an attempt at further surgery.

Tolerance for anisometropia varies from person to person.
