Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK)

IN BRIEF

Obsolete surgical (non-laser) vision correction technique

DISCUSSION

In ALK, a microkeratome was used to cut a flap of corneal tissue (much as in LASIK today) and the microkeratome was used to remove tissue from the stroma under the flap. ALK never gained great popularity and was succeeded by PRK and LASIK.

Don't confuse ALK with lamellar keratoplasty, which is a partial thickness corneal transplant.
