Ablation

IN BRIEF

(1) The process of ablating corneal tissue

(2) The programmed optical zone (i.e. what's supposed to happen to the corneal stroma during a laser eye surgery)

(3) The area of cornea from which tissue has been removed (i.e. what really happens to the corneal stroma during a laser eye surgery)

DISCUSSION

In laser surgeries, first the corneal stroma is exposed and then the laser fires at it to ablate tissue. The action of the laser basically forces the molecules to detach from each other.
